Rowan + Coltan’s Playful Sunset Engagement Session at Lake Newell near Brooks, Alberta

An engaged couple sits in a grassy field, back-to-back, looking at each other with big smiles over their shoulders.

The evening was perfect. A few clouds floated across the blue sky, the sun playing hide-and-seek through the puffs. There was little breeze, and the temperature was just perfect for Rowan + Coltan’s playful sunset engagement session at Lake Newell near Brooks, Alberta.

We met up at a little bay called Jackfish Bay, just south of Kinbrook Provincial Park on Lake Newell. It’s an area I frequent with Link, land owned by EID with respectful access granted to others. My pupper always loves running carefree through the fields, chasing gophers and flushing grouse.

A young family is cuddled close with their baby in the middle. The Mom is tickling his belly which is making him laugh.

By Rowan’s request, we started their session with some family photos – Rowan and Coltan have an adorable little boy with a head full of red hair, and an infectious little laugh. While the sun was still warm, we powered through a few different poses and angles, making sure to encapsulate all that their little family was.

Coltan’s sister Caitlin, whom you may know from the Salon, had come along with her boyfriend so they could take little man home once we were finished. After saying goodbyes, we watched the van pull back to the Kinbrook highway, and Rowan + Coltan’s engagement session truly began.

There is not enough I could say about how fun these two are. With playful personalities and just an overall sense of joy, it wasn’t hard to get them to show off their relationship. Having a mutual love of ridiculous antics, we utilized motions like dancing, skipping, and even a good ol’ game of tag in the fields surrounding Lake Newell.

With the sun creeping toward the horizon, we moved from one spot to the next, and were graced with one of the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve seen out here (and you already know I’m pretty biased about how lovely Alberta sunsets are). From wandering through the grass to references from Zoolander (“There it is!” “Magnum!” “Holy Moly!”) there was never a dull moment during the session.

We finished the engagement session with laughter and more crazy antics (backwards Ring Around The Rosie, anyone?), and as the sun completely vanished, shrouding the fields in blue hour light, we called it a day. The moon shone overhead as we made our way back to our vehicles and said our goodbyes.

Rowan + Coltan, thank you guys so much for letting me take these photos for you!! I had an absolute blast playing your third wheel, and I look forward to all the antics surrounding your wedding, too!! 😁
